A tea party for older residents living in the Bridgend area was hosted by a group of pupils from Brynteg Comprehensive School last week.

The event, held on Tuesday 1st July, was designed to bring people belonging to the Bridgend branch of Contact the Elderly closer together with the community.

Eight Year 12 pupils undertook all tasks from the food shopping to table layout to preparing sandwiches, ready to welcome the older guests at 3pm.  On their arrival the pupils got to work serving teas and coffee and sandwiches, whilst also interacting with the older people.

PC Sam Thompson from South Wales Police who organised the event said: “It is great to know that a charity such as Contact the Elderly exists especially as it is the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation in older people”.

She added: “The pupils worked extremely hard to prepare the tea party for the older people who use the Contact the Elderly service.  The tea party was the perfect opportunity for the old and young to mix..  It gave the pupils the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the needs and concerns of older people whilst it offered up the chance for members of the Bridgend Neighbour Police Team to also engage with young people”.

The pupils from Brynteg will continue with the initiative by undertaking a Christmas tea party for Contact the Elderly as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate.

Brynteg students raised an unbelievable amount of £5,732.89 in the run up to the festive season.  Activities raising money took place throughout December and everyone got into the swing of it.  The money raised through Brynteg Santa Appeal will ensure that children in Bridgend County who are less fortunate than others will receive a fabulous sack of presents from Santa on 25th December!
